Meet Robert Geller
Robert Geller was born in Hamburg, Germany. The son of a photographer, Robert developed an early interest in design that would lead to him to attend the Rhode Island School of Design from where he graduated in 2001. After finishing school, Robert began a traineeship at Marc Jacobs in New York City where he helped create four collections.
Upon completing his apprenticeship at Marc Jacobs, Robert joined Alexandre Plokhov to revamp Cloak, the influential menswear line where Robert began to develop the visual aesthetic that would guide later collections under his own name. Robert designed 5 collections alongside Alexandre and the duo would go on to win the Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation award in 2003. In the summer of 2006, Robert secured financial backing for a men’s collection bearing his name, which he launched for Fall/Winter 2007 in New York. His sophomore collection for Spring/ Summer 2008 was inspired by German art icon Joseph Beuys and prompted Men.Style.com reviewer Tim Blanks to name him “one to watch,” cementing Robert’s status as an emerging talent on America’s burgeoning menswear scene.
In February 2009, GQ named Robert winner of the Second Annual “Best New Menswear Designers in America” project. This competitive initiative, established in collaboration with the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), was created to recognize the rising stars of American men’s fashion. As part of the award, Robert partnered with Levi’s to launch a joint capsule collection sold at Bloomingdale’s during the fall of 2009.
