    Ann@Work
Hi there! My name is Nicole and I’m the new Human Resources Coordinator for Ann Taylor! A little over three months ago, I decided to take my career down a new path and leave the world of publicity for human resources. I was lucky enough to find an amazing opportunity here at Ann Taylor. So now instead of emailing and chatting with editors and producers every day, I spend my time being a business partner to all of the fabulous talent within our company.
A lot of people may think this is a huge career change, but (I have to say) HR is a lot like PR in more ways than you might imagine. Much like a publicist is the guardian/advocate for a brand, as part of the Human Resources team, I’m a guardian/advocate for the company’s culture and what we stand for. It’s my job to bring our Purpose, Values and Behaviors to life, and it is my responsibility to ensure each of your feels connected to the Ann Taylor brand.
So what have I been doing (or what do I do on a day-to-day basis)? Well, a large portion of my role (and what I truly enjoy about HR) is working directly with associates. From on-boarding to assisting them with any questions or concerns that might come up, it’s part of my job to be the go-to resource for our associates and to give them the tools they need to make them even better at what they do.This allows me to help them put their best selves forward every day – a value I am personally committed to, and I feel honored to be in a position that allows me to help others do the same. The other portion of my job involves things like preparing for each Town Hall, presenting to our new hires during Induction, coordinating Leadership Lunches and brainstorming with my team about how to make this year’s Engagement survey and our Performance Management process even better! It’s my hope that (as the newest addition to our HR team) I will grow into a trusted business partner to all of our associates.
For as long as I can remember fashion has always been a passion of mine. I always LOVE looking through magazines to see what trends are in for the season, and even as a little girl I can remember trying on four different outfits before choosing the perfect one – not much changes for a girl who loves clothes, shoes and accessories! All that being said, it’s truly an inspiration to be working alongside such talented people and to be part of an iconic brand with so much history. I can’t think of a better place to have taken my career!

    Equal Pay Day… Extended!
At Ann Taylor, we champion the modern working woman and her love of fashion in everything we do. That’s why for generations we have been the go-to style destination for career chic styles for professional women. But Ann Taylor is much more than a high-quality collection of beautiful wear now pieces. Our goal is always to unleash your confidence, femininity and feeling of success. We want you to shine!
Yesterday was Equal Pay Day, an event started by the National Committee on Pay Equity (NCPE) in 1996 and meant to recognize the gender wage gap—that fact that women make about 77 cents for every dollar men make for the same work. The event is cleverly fixed to always be on a Tuesday, to represent the six-day week that women would have to work to catch up to men. Back in the 70s, women used to wear pin-on buttons that said simply “59¢” in recognition of the pay gap. And while pin-on buttons may have been replaced by new accessories, the gap itself hasn’t really changed that much: 18 cents in more than twice as many years. But just like buttons have given way to Tweets and Facebook posts as a way to share your passions, the ways people are trying to correct the gender wage gap have changed too. GetRaised.com, a web service that shows people whether or not they are underpaid, and provides them with the tools to do something about it, is working to address the wage gap not through legislation or activism, but by empowering women directly. The website itself is fairly simple on the surface. You tell the system a little about what you do, where you do it and how much you make and GetRaised will show you whether you’re underpaid. If you are, the system guides you through the process of answering simple questions to create a custom Raise Request, a document designed to lay out a logical business case for your pay review. You hand it to your boss, and Getraised will help guide you through the raise process with tips on everything from appropriate professional attire to scheduling your raise talk And the results of the process are astounding: Of the women who have used GetRaised so far, over 70% have earned one, with an average raise of over $6,500. Normally, the service charges $20 (cheap, when you think about the size of an average raise) to put together your raise strategy. And if you don’t get a raise, they simply refund your money. But in honor of Equal Pay Day, GetRaised is absolutely, entirely free for everyone that joins today (Wednesday, April 13, from 12:00 a.m. EST to 11:59 p.m. EST). Why? Says Lead Scientist Matt Wallaert, “If yesterday was about recognizing that you are underpaid, let’s make today a time to do something about it.” So if you think you’re underpaid, find out for sure. And then go get the right raise!

    Ann Inspired
At Ann Taylor career development for young women is a cause that is close to our heart. So we were excited when associate favorite lifestyle site AHALife announced they were partnering with Girl Scouts of America to offer, for the first time ever online, Girl Scout Cookies.
Donate $25 on AhaLIFE to the Girl Scouts Career Exploration Program (CEP) through AHAlife, and they will gift gift you something equally as sweet—a box of Girl Scouts cookies of your choice. Choose from favorites like Do-si-dos, Samoas, Tagalongs, Thin Mints, Trefoils and Lemon Chalet Cremes. Donations will go directly to the Girl Scout Council of Greater New York. Their goal is to see 1,277 AHAreaders support this cause—that’s one donation for every girl that is involved in the South Bronx program in New York, which is designed to show girls their full potential by exposing them to a myriad of career paths.
True to the Girl Scout mission of teaching leadership, values and self-confidence, the CEP is taught during the school day to sixth through eighth grade girls in five under-resourced middle schools in the South Bronx of New York and includes empowering activities such as field visits to different corporations—from law firms to arts/entertainment companies—and guest speaker visits. So do something good today and get something sweet.

    Meet Lisa Axelson
Hi everyone. You may already know me from our website…I’m the head designer for Ann Taylor and I wanted to just introduce myself because you’ll be seeing me from time to time here, blogging about what’s going on in our design studio, talking about what’s inspiring me lately…or letting you know about a great book I just read!
For me, joining Ann Taylor was a dream come true because I’ve always had a real passion for authentic American style (Michael Kors was my senior year critic at Parsons School of Design, and instilled in me early on, a love for great American style and luxury.) Over the years, I’ve had the good fortune to work on many other iconic brands, so going to Ann Taylor felt like the right fit!
Reinventing Ann over the past two years has been about reinvigorating the soul of the brand. I started with the foundation—the perfect blazer, the perfect pant, the perfect pencil skirt, the perfect white shirt, trench and pump—those pieces you put on to feel great and look great (even when you may not be feeling it a 6 a.m.). It’s all about transforming the basic to the extraordinary with amazing fabrics, special details and lots of feminine finesse to bring you new favorites you’ll live in and love season after season. And honestly, I think we’ve done an amazing job so far! I see colleagues, women on the street and celebrities wearing our clothes everyday and I can’t believe how beautiful they look and how proud I am to be a part of this incredible brand. At the end of the day, we’re designing for real women, with real lives (very very busy lives) and to me that means fashion should be fun, not hard and not intimidating;it should make you feel great every single day, no matter where that day may take you.-Lisa, Head Designer
