If there’s anything we’ve learned from the tips at Executive Presence with Marie Claire – it’s the importance of dressing for the job you want. Marketing jobs come in all different forms – from working within a financial institution to a downtown boutique fashion company. Let the industry you’re working within define your guidelines for what to wear to an interview for a marketing career. If you’re going to interview on wall street – go with a great suit and statement accessories – if you’re interviewing at a fashion company or boutique agency, a suit could be the factor that doesn’t land you the job. For most marketing careers – its best to be somewhere in between.
1. Incorporate current fashion trends. An important part of marketing is being in-the-know about what’s happening in fashion, art and culture. Don’t be afraid to wear a sweater with leather detail or a moto jacket.
2. Wear at least one classic piece. Whether its a camel trench, perfect pumps or white button-down, wear at least one basic piece that you can easily mix with something more trendy.
3. Wear statement jewelry. The marketing industry lies somewhere in between the more conservative jobs like a legal or financial profession and a creative job. You should look appropriate and professional, but can have some fun with a stack of bangles, mix-and-matched delicate rings, or a printed tote.
4. It’s all about the shoes. Show off your personality with a pair of printed pumps or peeptoe shooties (just make sure you can walk in them!)
