Bare All: How to Wear Shorts to Work

how to wear shorts to work

As much as we all wish Summer Fridays came around every week, sometimes its necessary to bring summer to the office. We love wearing shorts to work in the warm weather – but its important to know where they are appropriate and how to style them so you still look polished and professional.  The industry you work in is key. Would your boss wear shorts or a maxi skirt to work? While shorts may be appropriate in the fashion or publishing industry, they might not work at a legal firm. Take your style guidelines from the upper management in your office.

We’ve put together our list of DO’s and DON’Ts on how to wear shorts to work:

DO

Pay attention to length. A good rule of thumb is to keep them to where your fingertips hit your legs or longer.

Wear tailored shorts. We love loose fitting, pleated shorts this season.

Pick up a printed pair. Stick to a classic print for the office like stripes, paisley, or a geometric pattern.

Pair shorts with a feminine blouse. Complete the look with a blazer, cardigan, or scarf.

Try the trend for Casual Friday – they’re the perfect way to transition from work to weekend.

DON’T

Style shorts with a t-shirt or tank. Paired with shorts, it’s too casual for an office environment. Opt instead for a feminine blouse.

Wear denim. Save the cutoffs for a beach day with the girls.

Slip on flip-flops. Instead, lengthen your legs with a pair of wedges or open-toed heels.

Even if you have a VS model’s legs, “shorts at work” is simply unprofessional. Ladies – dress for success!

I’ve worn dress shorts to work; it’s the same as a skirt when paired with cute shoes & a blouse.

Lovely selection but at least here in Germany shorts are not appropriate for work.

Shorts are definitely not professional in the workplace, no matter good they’re worn.

Dress for success (which does NOT include shorts or tank tops!).
