Bare All: How to Wear a Summer Dress to Work

how to wear a summer dress to work

We don’t know about you, but the last thing we want to wear in the summer is pencil skirts, button downs, and blazers. It can be tough to know what to wear to work in the summer – it’s important to hit the balance between something that is cool and comfortable but still office-appropriate. Our ultimate wardrobe best friend for any season is the dress. Versatile and easy to change up with shoes and accessories, it’s a closet essential for building any basic work wardrobe.

So how do you take your favorite summer dresses from the park to the office and still look polished enough to hit the board room? Here’s our tips for how to wear a summer dress to work:

1. Length is key. Nobody wants to spend the workday worrying whether their ensemble matches the environment.

2. Leave the flowy maxi dress at home – or cinch it with a belt. A skinny belt can also take your look from desk to date night .

3. Flat sandals can make an already casual dress too casual. Low-heeled ankle strap sandals or low wedges add polish to a favorite floral dress without taking it over the top.

4. Layer up for the chilly office. A lightweight printed scarf, classic cardigan, or cropped blazer add dimension to a simple summer sheath and keep you warm from the office A/C.

5. Be careful with dresses with low cut backs and cut-outs. While great for the beach or a night out, these styles are best worn out of the office. Stick to simple sheaths, shirtdresses, or a tank dress with a hi-lo hem.

Be careful with the shoes. Open toe shoes/sandals are huge no-no in a LOT of workplaces…
